Pain management in terminal cancer patient

Objective: to identify pharmacological and non-pharmacological actions that enable adequate management of oncological patients in advanced stages. Method: the study was qualitative, descriptive, and applied, based on a bibliographic review and documentary analysis of indexed scientific articles, theses, and books. Databases such as Scielo, PubMed, and Dialnet were consulted, allowing the synthesis of key contributions regarding pain management in terminal cancer. Results: the WHO analgesic ladder emerged as the most widely used tool, highlighting potent opioids such as morphine, fentanyl, and methadone, along with codeine, hydrocodone, and oxycodone. In cases of resistance, interventional therapies (including nerve blocks, cordotomy, chemical neurolysis, neuromodulation, and radiotherapy) were employed. Non-pharmacological interventions such as aromatherapy, music therapy, massage, and psychotherapy also contributed to pain management. Conclusion: an integral approach that combines pharmacological, interventional, and complementary strategies is essential to optimize pain control, improve quality of life, and promote a humanized palliative care perspective.
